Runaway rail vehicle collision leads to REM investigation

MONTREAL — Construction consortium NouvLR has released a statement explaining a mishap that ended with a bang during construction of the REM LRT project in Montreal.

As was recorded and presented on social media, on Sept. 5 a rail maintenance vehicle experienced a failure of its connection system, NouvLR stated, leading it to coast down a section of the Samuel-de Champlain Bridge towards the Ile-des-Soeurs station of the REM project.

The online video depicts a large bang upon collision.

The vehicle was stopped by the protective measures installed on the rails “specifically to ensure the health and safety of our workers and the public in case of these unforeseeable events,” stated the builder.

There were no injuries in the incident and further investigation is continuing to understand the circumstances.

“While we investigate, work is stopped only on activities related to the overhead catenary system of the network. Work continues on all other work sites,” the statement indicated.
