Fire breaks out at Toronto high rise undergoing renovations

TORONTO — A fire involving construction debris and garbage broke out at a highrise building under construction on Richmond Street East in Toronto today (Oct. 27).

Toronto police and fire crews were called to the scene at around 2:08 p.m.

“We responded to a fire there (which was) subsequently upgraded to a three-alarm fire,” said a spokesperson from Toronto Fire Services. “Upon arrival we found some construction debris and garbage on fire on the third floor and discovered some smaller fires on the second and fourth floors.

“We have since extinguished those fires and are just completing our overhaul of activities. The building was under renovation so there were no occupants…no injuries to report at this time.”

The fire is now under control.

“The main body of the fire was located on the third floor, smaller fire on the second floor and one on the fourth floor,” the spokesperson noted. “There was quite a lot of smoke but we cleared that out and have found no further fires at this time.”

The investigation is ongoing and the Daily Commercial News will have more on the story.
