Inquests scheduled for victims of fall from heights deaths

TORONTO — The joint inquest into the deaths of William Bruin, William Maguire and Norman Gerrard will take place Feb. 5. Each died from injuries sustained due to falls from heights while working at various construction sites in Toronto.

The announcement was made by Dr. David Cameron, regional supervising coroner for inquests.

Bruin, 33, died on Sept. 15, 2017; Maguire, 60, died on March 27, 2018; and Gerrard, 48, died on March 20, 2019. An inquest into their deaths is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest will examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths. It is expected to last 10 days and hear from approximately eight witnesses.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. Bonnie Goldberg will be the presiding officer and Alessandra Hollands and Indira Stewart will be inquest counsel.
