Two workers sent to hospital after being exposed to hazardous material

TORONTO — Emergency crews who responded to a call at a building under construction in Toronto this morning (Jan. 11) found hazardous materials when they arrived at the scene.

The call was received at 10:49 a.m. to the parking garage at the building, located at 68 Esther Shiner Blvd. in the Leslie Street and Highway 401 area of North York.

“Our crews were called to this location for a possible fire,” Cap. Dan Vieira of Toronto Fire Services. “When we arrived, we had workers on scene letting us know that there was a bucket on site with some smoldering, some smoke coming from it. Our crews investigated. It appears to be some chemical, some sort of construction materials being mixed and off gassing.”

Two workers in the area were exposed. They were assessed by EMS and taken to hospital.

Others workers were assessed on scene. No other injuries were reported.

“Our hazardous materials crews and our firefighters were there just to make sure that all workers are accounted for and checking air quality,” Vieira noted.

Toronto Fire Services is remaining on the site to complete its investigation.

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development has also been notified.

The Daily Commercial News will have more on the story.
