Pacific BioEnergy is undertaking an ambitious expansion of its wood pellet plant in Prince George, B.C., which will make the facility the largest of its kind in Canada.
The $24 million construction phase at the wood pellet plant involves the installation of a new in-feed line, which is designed to handle bush grind, which is wood waste residual from the bush.
The expanded plant will utilize more mountain pine beetle killed wood and other waste wood from the forests surrounding Prince George.
Prior to expansion, the plant produced a maximum of about 150,000 to 180,000 tonnes a year. When the plant is completed in December, it will produce 350,000 tonnes a year. This will make it the largest plant of its kind in Canada and the second-largest in North America.
At the peak of activity, there were 40 to 50 people working on the construction of the plant expansion
The wood pellets will be used for coal replacement in power generation plants and exported through Vancouver to European markets.
Pacific BioEnergy Corp. is an integrated manufacturer and international supplier of wood pellet biomass fuel to industrial purchasers worldwide. The company is based in Prince George, with its head office in Vancouver.
