Toronto’s Ryerson University won first place overall at the recent Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race 2012.
Students from across the country competed in the 38th annual Canadian university engineering student competition, which pits universities against each other in an annual nation-wide celebration of innovation and engineering spirit. This year’s competition was recently held in Calgary at the Canada Olympic Park, sponsored by Holcim Canada Inc.
The University of Calgary took second place over and Queen’s University from Kingston, Ont. finished in third.
The rules dictate that toboggans must include a roll bar, running surfaces composed only of concrete while maintaining a total weight less than 300 lbs. They are subject to a safety inspection before they can be raced.
Ryerson also won awards for Top Speed, Fastest Run Time, Best Performing Toboggan, the Holcim Award for Most Sustainable Toboggan and Most Innovative Design.
The University of Western Ontario was awarded for Best Technical Exhibit, Best Technical Report, Best Concrete Reinforcement Design, Vest Concrete Mix Design and Best Toboggan Design.
Manitoba’s Red River College was given the Green Team Award and was the Most Improved Team.
Other awards include Best Braking Distance — University of Saskatchewan; Best Costumes — University of Calgary; Best Superstructure and Mechanical Systems — SAIT Polytechnic; CIRCA Award for Best Use of Fly Ash — Queen’s University; People’s Choice — University of Manitoba; Best New Team — University of British Columbia — Okanagan; Most Spectacular Run — University of Alberta.
