Gemterra Developments Corp. has broken ground on a 20-storey glass and metal panel condominium tower, designed by architects Turner Fleischer Inc., in Toronto’s expanding Sheppard Avenue corridor.

Designed by architects Turner Fleischer Inc., the tower is part of a development that ultimately will include a second, 22-storey tower as well as 51, three-storey stacked townhouse units.

The project is being constructed on a 3.27-acre site north of Sheppard Avenue, near Kennedy Road. Located one block from Highway 401, the property is surrounded by a golf course, library, shopping centre and medical building.

The site has been rezoned to accommodate smaller unit sizes and an increased number of units.

The planned 470,000-square-foot development will encompass a total of 578 units, including 527 in the two towers.

The project is being undertaken by a team that includes structural engineers Stephenson Engineering Ltd., mechanical and electrical engineers Trace Engineering Ltd., interior designers Tanner Hill Associates Inc., and landscape architects MBTW Group. Construction manager is 59 Project Management Inc.

The project is being built in compliance with the city of Toronto’s green standard, a two-tier set of performance measures with supporting guidelines related to sustainable site and building design for new private and public development.

Ground was officially broken on the first tower of the LOVE condominiums in mid-June.

Participants at the event included local politicians as well as Gemterra vice-president Yan Wang.
