MILTON
Oakville-based Island Steel Erectors Limited was hit with an $85,000 fine after an employee was killed. The company was found in violation of the Occupation Health and Safety Act.
On Dec. 21, 2010, a truck carrying bundled steel frames arrived at a site in Oakville but the crane used to unload the material was absent. Instead, the worker on the site decided to use a forklift to get the steel frames out of the truck. The driver removed the chains that held the steel together and the worker attempted to use the forklift to carry them out.
While trying to take out the steel, the materials slid off the forks, falling on the other side of the truck and fatally landed on the driver.
The company pleaded guilty because it failed to provide a safe way of moving the material without endangering its workers.
The employers also face a 25-per cent victim fine surcharge which is allocated toward a provincial government fund to help victims of crime.
