TORONTO

The Ontario region of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) has awarded scholarships to students with the highest grades in steel design courses at six universities in the province. The scholarship program is sponsored by various CISC members.

“It goes without saying that our future will only be as bright as our profile with the designers of tomorrow,” said Walters Inc. president Walter Koppelaar.

“Helping young people recognize the unparalleled potential of building with steel must be one of our highest callings.”

The 2012-2013 recipients are: Jeremiah Vanaderlaan of McMaster University; Will Hayho, Western University; Kevin Goorts, University of Waterloo; Johnathan Sevick, University of Toronto; Oliver Achkar, Ryerson University; and Gregory Louisy, Carleton University.

The program was established in 2002. Koppelaar said it is the sponsorship committee’s goal to significantly enhance both the number and value of scholarships in the coming year. This year’s sponsors are Dymin Steel Inc., M & G Steel Ltd., Telco Steel Works Ltd. and Walters Inc.

The 2012-13 scholarships were presented at the Ontario region’s recent 22nd steel design awards of excellence gala in Toronto.
