HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, N.L.—The federal government is investing $2 million to help the Happy Valley-Goose Bay Airport expansion in Labrador get off the ground.
Scheduled to begin in mid-June, the project consists of building an 11,000 square foot centre adjacent and connected to the existing terminal building.
"The new facility will mainly be used for the efficient distribution of mobile workforces for large hydroelectric, mining, and research and development projects currently taking place, and envisioned to take place in Labrador in the future," explains a release from the government.
Happy Valley-Goose Bay is slated to be the hub of movement for the non-resident workforce because of major capital projects underway, the release reads, with 3,000 charter passengers a month predicted over the next four years.
The new centre will accommodate transient workers without conflicting with normal scheduled traffic, which will continue to use the main terminal facility.
"Once completed, this project will add a further $5.5 million investment to the $13 million expended on the upgrade and expansion of the original terminal building. This represents a total investment of over $18 million in infrastructure improvements during the last eight years," states Paul Snelgrove, chairperson, Goose Bay Airport Corporation Board in a statement.
The Goose Bay Airport Corporation is a non-profit that manages and operates the civil aviation area at the airport.
