TORONTO—Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne was on hand for a tour as Queen’s Park and owner Halton Healthcare confirmed an opening date of Dec. 13 for the new $2.27-billion Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, located at 3001 Hospital Gate in north Oakville, Ont.
Halton Healthcare announced substantial completion of the hospital on time and on budget on July 31, which meant the owner could take possession and begin the transfer from the old hospital on Reynolds Street to the new facility.
At 1.6 million square feet, the new hospital is triple the size of the existing Oakville hospital it will replace. A total of 457 inpatient beds will be ready on opening day, hospital officials say, representing an increase of 135 beds from the current hospital.
Construction took four years using the Alternative Financing and Procurement model of funding, which includes a maintenance period after substantial completion that raises the total cost of the contract to $2.7 billion.
Contributors include the province of Ontario, spending $2.27-billion; $270 million from Halton Healthcare; $130 million from the Town of Oakville; $65 million raised by the Oakville Hospital Foundation; and $3 million donated by hospital volunteers.
While under construction, the project was known as the New Oakville Hospital; however, Halton Healthcare has confirmed that the historic Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital name will be transferred to the site on Dec. 13 when the doors at the new hospital open and old hospital officially shuts down.
