TORONTO—Ontario Power Generation Inc. (OPG) has set the timetables for two major builds — one a $12.8-billion megabuild — in its latest quarterly financial report.
OPG’s Darlington plant refurbishment is currently in the execution phase, the firm reported Aug. 12. The project to refurbish the four units at the Darlington station east of Toronto has an approved budget of $12.8 billion, including capitalized interest and escalation. Preparation activities and pre-requisite project work continued during the second quarter. The refurbishment of the first unit, Unit 2, is on track to commence in the fourth quarter of 2016, with the last unit scheduled to be completed by 2026.
Unit 2 is scheduled to be returned to service in the first quarter of 2020.
Life-to-date capital expenditures on the project were $2.6 billion as of June 30.
OPG states the project will generate thousands of construction jobs at Darlington, with an average of 8,800 per year, and at some 60 Ontario companies supplying components for the job.
OPG also reported that construction work on its new 28-megawatt hydroelectric generating station at New Post Creek continued as scheduled during the second quarter of 2016. New Post Creek is located near the Abitibi River in northwestern Ontario about 100 kilometres north of Smooth Rock Falls and 13 kilometres northeast of OPG’s Abitibi Canyon Generating Station.
The project has a planned in-service date in the first half of 2018 and an approved budget of $300 million. Life-to-date capital expenditures were $162 million as of June 30.
