TORONTO — The federal government has announced three new sets of local water and wastewater expenditures for three Ontario cities: Brantford, Orillia and Hamilton.
Representatives of three levels of government were on hand in Orillia recently to announce $2.8 million in spending on upgrades to the city’s wastewater treatment centre including the design and construction of a new cloth media tertiary filtration process, with a hydraulic lift station, cloth media filters and buildings to house the individual processes.
Tertiary treatment and process optimization at the wastewater treatment centre are required to ensure the city meets its new compliance limits for phosphorus entering Lake Simcoe, noted a federal media statement.
The federal government is providing 50 per cent of funding for the project under the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund. The provincial and municipal governments are covering the rest of the costs, $700,000 each.
Shortly after the Orillia announcement, federal, provincial and municipal politicians were in attendance in Hamilton as 16 new projects valued at $42 million were announced under the same fund. The federal government is providing 50 per cent of funding for the projects with the provincial and city governments splitting the remaining costs.
Among the projects approved are rehabilitation of the Osler Road pumping station, construction of a new Lynden water treatment system and upgrades to the Woodward Wastewater Treatment Plant Methane Storage Facility.
In addition to these projects, $3.9 million in federal funding will be spent in the city of Brantford on four water and wastewater projects.
