Toronto Global replies to Amazon headquarters bid

TORONTO — Toronto Global recently responded to a request for proposals to build Amazon’s second worldwide headquarters in the Toronto region.

“The Toronto region, which for the purposes of this bid includes the collective value proposition from Waterloo Region and Guelph, offers a highly-educated and growing pool of affordable talent that, when combined with our unique cultural diversity, dynamic economy and outstanding quality of life, sets us apart from all others,” said Toronto Global chairman Mark Cohon, Toronto Global vice-chair Janet Ecker and Toronto Global CEO Toby Lennox, in a statement in support of the region’s joint reply to the Amazon HQ2 bid.

Toronto Global is an arm’s-length not-for-profit corporation representing municipalities in the Toronto region with a mandate to work with municipal, provincial and federal colleagues to market the entire region to international investors.

“By releasing this bid document in full, we are inviting Amazon and the entire world to take a close look at all that the Toronto region has to offer,” reads the statement.

“From the downtown core to commercial parks to suburban lands, we have identified 10 distinct potential sites for Amazon’s new headquarters, showcasing the rich variety of competitively priced and available real estate options.”

Amazon, an online retailer, launched its search for a second home base in September, promising to bring 50,000 new jobs and spend more than $5 billion on construction.
