OTTAWA — The City of Ottawa has announced that on Jan. 11 its Built Heritage Sub-Committee will consider an application to partially demolish the Chateau Laurier’s parking garage.
The application stems from an engineering report that indicates the four-storey building is no longer structurally sound, a Jan. 4 statement said.
An engineering analysis of the parking garage, built in 1969, indicates it has deteriorated badly due to salt infiltration and age. For safety reasons, the garage is no longer in use. City heritage staff support the demolition, noting it has reached the end of its useful life, the statement said.
While the garage would need to be removed prior to construction of a planned addition to the hotel, the city has not yet received a revised development application for the replacement building. The sub-committee’s decision on demolition of the garage will not affect any future decision about what might be built in its place, said the statement.
The Chateau Laurier is protected under the Ontario Heritage Act and all additions must be approved by Ottawa City Council.
A revised development application for the new addition is expected, and public consultation could begin as early as this winter.
If city council approves the application for demolition, the plan for the site is to create a surface lot for hotel guests, retaining and stabilizing a portion of the existing walls to screen parked vehicles from view, the city said. If approved, demolition work would start in February and be completed within three months.
