MONTREAL — Ivanhoe Cambridge has announced a $200-million redevelopment project for the Montreal Eaton Centre.
The spending is the latest step in the firm’s Projet Nouveau Centre, the developer’s plan to invest $1 billion in downtown Montreal, a recent media statement said.
The plan includes completed improvements to the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth, which reopened in July, 2017, and Maison Manuvie, inaugurated in November 2017, and current upgrades to Place Ville Marie, planned for 2018 to 2019, and the Eaton Centre project, which will continue until 2020.
The Eaton Centre on Sainte-Catherine Street is Quebec’s busiest shopping centre, the statement said. The project includes merging the Complexe Les Ailes with the Eaton Centre and will see a new gourmet dining hall developed. The developer said the revamped facility will offer new spaces to large-format retailers.
Complementary projects in the vicinity include upgrades to Sainte-Catherine Street West as well as construction of the future McGill light rail train station as part of the Reseau electrique metropolitain.
“Sainte-Catherine Street’s great strength is its ability to reinvent itself continually,” stated Claude Sirois, president, retail at Ivanhoe Cambridge, in the statement. “Our demanding clientele wants an innovative and sustainable project that stands out for its urban character. With the physical changes we are making and the collaboration of our current and future retailers and brands, we are setting out to redefine the urban shopping experience downtown.”
