Design contract awarded for Daniel J. MacDonald Building

CHARLOTTETOWN — A $3.3-million contract to design the renewal project for the Daniel J. MacDonald Building in downtown Charlottetown, P.E.I. has been awarded to NORR Architects & Engineers Limited.

The Daniel J. MacDonald Building was constructed in 1984 to house the national headquarters of Veterans Affairs Canada. The contract includes designing mechanical upgrades to the building. The renovations are expected to create an enhanced, greener workplace for public servants.

Planning and design work for the building renewal will begin immediately, with construction expected to start in January 2020 and be completed by fall 2023. The modernization project is expected to provide economic and job opportunities across many business sectors in the region, states a release issued by Public Services and Procurement Canada.

Building systems will be installed to reduce the overall greenhouse gas emissions to meet federal objectives by 2030, adds the release. The design will be targeting an environmental certification of five Green Globes, which is the highest level under the certification program for environmental sustainability.

“It is important that staff have a safe place to work and that our buildings run as efficiently as possible,” said Seamus O’Regan, minister of veteran affairs and associate minister of national defence, in a statement. “The modernization of the Veterans Affairs Canada head office will ensure that staff have a place where they can work to their full abilities to provide the vital programs and services that veterans and their families need.”
