Bird selected to build nine OPP detachments

MISSISSAUGA, ONT. – Bird Construction Inc. has been selected as the preferred proponent for the Ontario Provincial Police modernization Phase 2 project to design, build and finance nine OPP detachments in nine communities.

The provincial government is slated to spend $182 million to build the new facilities, located in Moosonee, Fort Frances, Hawkesbury, Huron County, West Parry Sound, Manitoulin Island, Mississauga, Marathon and Orillia.

Bird was selected by Infrastructure Ontario, the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and the OPP.

The company will undertake the design and build and will also own the concession responsible for the financing of the public-private partnership project through Bird Capital, a wholly owned subsidiary.

Each facility features an administration area for support staff and management, an operational area with offices and evidence storage vaults, a secure functions area with holding cells and interview rooms, and a public admittance area, states a release issued by Bird.

The company is expected to reach financial close this summer with construction expected to commence shortly thereafter.

“Bird is pleased to be selected as preferred proponent for the delivery of the OPP Modernization Phase 2 project, continuing our strong relationship with the OPP that was established during the Phase 1 project,” said Ian Boyd, president and CEO of Bird, in a statement.

“The OPP Modernization Phase 2 project further establishes Bird as a leader in multi-site P3 projects across Canada.”
