Broccolini starts Amazon distribution centre build

OTTAWA — Broccolini officially started construction on Amazon’s build-to-suit distribution centre in Ottawa which, once complete, will be the largest industrial facility ever built in the region with a surface area of more than one million square feet.

The opening of the new centre is slated for the summer of 2019 and will create over 650 full time jobs once the facility is operational, and up to 1,500 jobs over the course of its construction, states a release issued by Broccolini.

“Broccolini continues to pursue the development of major projects in the National Capital Region and this new project in the federal capital confirms its position as a Canadian leader in real estate and in the construction of industrial buildings in Canada,” said James Beach, director of real estate and development at Broccolini in Ottawa, in a statement.

The company specializes in the industrial, commercial, institutional and residential markets in Canada and acts in various roles including general contractor, construction manager, project manager, property manager and developer, adds the release.

In addition to its role as builder and developer for the new distribution centre, Broccolini will also act as owner and property manager.

Employees at the new warehouse in the capital city’s eastern suburb of Orleans will pick, pack and ship large items such as household decor, sporting equipment and gardening tools.

The warehouse will be Amazon’s eighth in Canada.
