National Bank kicks off $500M build on new Montreal HQ

MONTREAL — The National Bank held an official groundbreaking ceremony earlier this month to kick off construction of its new 40-storey head office in Montreal.

The $500-million-plus building, to rise at 800 Saint-Jacques St. W., will be 200 metres tall, one of the largest office buildings in Montreal, said a release, and it represents the largest real estate investment in the city in 25 years.

The bank also announced spending of over $20 million to renovate its Toronto offices at 130 King St. and celebrated the opening of its new Vancouver offices on Nov. 1. The bank will occupy five floors at 475 Howe St. in Vancouver.

The bank is aiming for LEED v4 Gold and WELL certification with its new Montreal headquarters.

The Montreal firm Menkes Shooner Dagenais LeTourneux Architectes is undertaking design with Broccolini the general contractor and project manager and Pomerleau the structural contractor.

Construction work is expected to take four years and be completed by the end of 2022. A 40,000-square-foot city park will be created at the foot of the new building and will be open to the public.

Features and amenities will include the National Bank business centre, a conference centre, two-level cafeteria, daycare centre, gym, 400-bicycle parking spaces, 80 charging stations for electric cars and an outside garden on the 40th floor.
