Asphalt excellence celebrated through 2018 Trillium Awards

Industry performers including the 2018 recipients of the Ontario Asphalt Pavement Council’s (OAPC) Trillium Awards were able to take a bow at the council’s recent fall seminar.

Recognizing excellence in hot mix asphalt plant operations, the awards are based on rigorous criteria including the plant’s appearance, safety, environmental initiatives and community relations programs.

The awards are granted for a three-year period, at which point the plant must apply for recertification.

“When a plant earns a Trillium Award, they are recognized as being the best of the best. This year we had an impressive three new Trillium Award (winners) and 12 recertifications,” said the OAPC’s Plant and Paving Committee chair Mike Deckert.

In announcing the winners Deckert said, “The asphalt industry works hard to make itself a good neighbour and a steward of the environment. The industry has made great strides in lowering emission (levels) over the past 40 years.”

For more than two decades it “has been way ahead of the curve” in environmental initiatives, he said, citing the fifth publication of its Environmental Practices Guide in 2015.

The council also recognized the 2018 recipient of its Bleed Black Award.

Domenic Passalacqua is the facility/asphalt plant manager for D. Crupi & Sons Limited and an active member of the OAPC’s Environmental and Plant and Paving Committees.

The purpose of the award is to honour individuals with a strong commitment to and passion for the asphalt pavement industry.

“When you need to know something about asphalt plants, Domenic’s name floats to the top,” said Yellowline Asphalt general manager Donn Bernal, who presented the award.
