HALIFAX—Defence Construction Canada (DCC) celebrated the grand opening of its new Willow Park Armoury in Halifax on Jan. 23.
The armoury is the new home of 36 Service Battalion, 36 Signal Regiment and 33 Field Ambulance from 5th Canadian Division and the project was delivered on time and under budget, noted the DCC website.
The facility will support the units’ training and deployment and includes administration and training areas, an outdoor compound for military vehicle fleets, common mess areas and a large drill hall.
The facility has a recruitment office as well.
The units were previously dispersed in older, separate buildings that were demolished as part of the $36-million design-build project.
The facility was designed to LEED Silver standards.
One element of the project was the replacement of nearly a kilometre of steam line with a new direct-bury piping system, undertaken under tight timelines between mid-May and October 2017, when the steam plant was not in use, noted the DCC website.
DCC supported the project with construction contract management services including environmental co-ordination, commissioning and fire and life safety inspections.
Todd Osmond, DCC co-ordinator, construction services at CFB Halifax, commented, “The key was to provide a functional building for all three users.”
The armoury was completed last August.
