Seneca College innovation centre nears completion

TORONTO — Federal President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Digital Government Jane Philpott toured Seneca College’s new Centre for Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship (CITE) in Toronto Feb. 8 as the $85-million, five-storey structure nears completion.

The college received funding from both the federal and provincial governments. The $24 million federal contribution came through the federal Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund, explained a media statement. The facility will support applied research and commercialization, specialized training, business incubation and acceleration activities, the statement said.

Seneca and KUKA Canada, a specialist in advanced manufacturing and automation, signed a Memorandum of Understanding last November to equip the centre with robotic equipment. The 1,200-square-foot KUKA Robotics Lab will include seven robots and associated software.

The 274,000-square-foot building will include a large atrium for events, specialized lab spaces, general and specialized classrooms and student collaboration space. There will also be space and entrepreneurial supports to help small-to-medium-size enterprises develop innovation capacity, said the statement.

Programs from Seneca’s faculty of applied science and engineering technology will occupy a significant portion of the building.

“We’re delighted to be showcasing our CITE building as it nears completion,” said Seneca College president David Agnew in the statement. “Thanks to the financial support of the federal government’s Strategic Investment Fund, CITE showcases Seneca’s commitment to innovation, technology and entrepreneurship.”
