Second City to build three theatres at One York

TORONTO — Menkes Developments has announced that Second City has signed on as a third-floor tenant at One York Street in Toronto and will be constructing three theatres and classroom space for the Second City Training Centre with completion and opening of the facilities targeted for the fourth quarter of 2020.

One York is a two million-square-foot mixed-use complex located at York and Harbour streets in Toronto’s South Core Business District.

Menkes made the announcement in partnership with Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan and Sun Life Financial.

Second City will occupy 28,700 square feet in the retail podium at One York. Besides the comedy theatres and its improvisation arts school, Second City will operate a games-driven bar and restaurant, stated a Nov. 25 release.

One York includes a 35-storey Class AAA office tower, two 70- and 66-storey condominium towers known as Harbour Plaza Residences, a four-storey retail podium with 170,000 square feet of commercial retail space, and a four-level underground parking garage. It was completed by Menkes in 2016.

“We are proud to embark on this exciting partnership with Toronto’s legendary comedy theatre,” said Peter Menkes, president commercial/industrial at Menkes, in the release. “The Second City will be the perfect addition to this mixed-use complex, adding entertainment to our exceptional list of retail tenants, and further solidifying One York Street’s position as the ultimate, live, work, play environment.”

“The Second City is excited to break ground on three new state-of-the-art theatres, as well as provide increased classroom space for our ever-growing Second City Training Centre, which serves thousands of students of all ages every year,” said D’Arcy Stuart, COO of The Second City.

“This is also a prime opportunity for us to add dynamic multi-use spaces to accommodate groups, meetings, celebrations and events of all sizes. We are excited to be part of the Menkes vision for the South Core.”
