SNC-Lavalin and partners win PCI precast concrete award

SNC-Lavalin and partners win PCI precast concrete award
PCI — The multiple-award-winning Samuel De Champlain Bridge opened to traffic in 2019.

MONTREAL — The Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) has given a 2020 Design Award to SNC-Lavalin and its joint venture partners T.Y. Lin International and International Bridge Technologies for their work on Montreal’s Samuel De Champlain Bridge.

Bridge owner Infrastructure Canada was also cited for the project, stated a Feb. 27 release.

The PCI Design Awards program encourages innovative approaches to using precast, prestressed concrete.

Opened to traffic in 2019, the 3.4-kilometre bridge required 154,000 tonnes of concrete to complete the longest crossing over the St. Lawrence River. Fifty million vehicles per year pass over this bridge, making it one of the busiest in Canada. Using precast concrete helped with a challenging schedule from design to bridge-opening day, stated the release. And using precast concrete footings reduced impacts on the river.

The project was carried out through a public-private partnership agreement with the Government of Canada and the Signature on the Saint Lawrence Group, a consortium consisting of SNC-Lavalin, ACS and HOCHTIEF.

Other honours SNC-Lavalin has earned for the project include an Engineering Excellence Honor award from the American Council of Engineering Companies, California; an Excellence in Structural Engineering award from the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations; the Steel Award for Excellence in Steel Construction granted by the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction; and first place in the Top 10 Bridges awards in North America in 2018 from Roads & Bridges magazine.
