Quebec residential construction can resume

QUEBEC CITY — The government of Quebec has announced that certain defined residential construction work will be included on the province’s list of priority activities and services effective April 20.

A statement that its minister of labour issued April 13 said work to complete construction of residential units scheduled for no later than July 31, 2020 will be authorized.

Activities permitted include construction and renovation work, including those related to surveying and building inspection.

“As residential construction has tangible social impacts on a large number of households, it was necessary to include this sector in the list of priority services and activities,” said Minister of Labour, Employment and Social Solidarity Jean Boulet in a statement translated from French.

“We want to make sure that people will be able to move into their new residences as soon as possible, which in turn will make housing available on the rental market.”

The original March 23 announcement of the closure of non-priority services in the province permitted limited types of construction workplaces and services to operate including construction for emergency repairs or for security purposes, electricians and plumbers and other trades for emergency services, and rental equipment.

Firms linked to building maintenance such as elevators, ventilation and alarms can also operate.

In addition, landscaping and maintenance services including nurseries, garden centres and swimming pool businesses were recently given permission to open.
