SusGlobal Energy to open fertilizer production plant in Hamilton
ZAS - SusGlobal Energy’s East Bayfront plant in Hamilton, Ont. will have the capacity to produce $2 million worth of organic fertilizer daily, processing 65,000 metric tonnes of organic waste.

HAMILTON, ONT. – SusGlobal Energy recently announced it has acquired an industrial facility on Nash Road North on Hamilton’s East Bayfront for construction of its new organic fertilizer production facility.

The new facility will have the capacity to produce approximately $2 million worth of organic fertilizer daily, processing 65,000 metric tonnes of organic waste. SusGlobal converts green bin waste into pathogen-free liquid organic fertilizer.

Toronto’s ZAS Architects is the designer for the project, which will involve conversion of the 40,000-square-foot former site of an animal pellet production plant.

An Aug. 19 statement explained the architecture will retain the structural skeleton of the existing warehouse tower with the exterior facade to be recladded with transparent materials.

An 11,000-square-foot addition will be added to house office space and labs for SusGlobal’s research and development staff.

“The design of SusGlobal’s new facility in Hamilton East Bayfront embraces the past and celebrates the future, creating a healthy and wellness-focused workplace that signals the changing face of Hamilton’s industries and its emerging green economy. This project also provides an opportunity to rethink how we approach the design of sustainable waste management facilities as integral sites in our city landscape,” said Paul Stevens, senior principal at ZAS, in a statement.

Currently, SusGlobal operates a 120,000-tonne-per-annum intake and compost facility in Belleville, Ont. The construction of the new Hamilton facility is expected to be completed by 2022.
