Ontario plans new LTC projects for east Toronto

TORONTO— The Ontario government has announced two new long-term care home redevelopment projects in the east Toronto community of Scarborough.

Midland Gardens Care Community will be redeveloped with plans to construct an additional six-storey building attached to the existing home, stated a Dec. 10 release. There will be 21 new and 299 upgraded beds as part of the new construction. Construction is expected to start in fall 2022.

The other project is at the Altamont Care Community site, to be renamed Altamont Scarborough. A new long-term care home will be built on the same site as the existing home and will have a total of 448 beds. The project includes a new allocation for 204 upgraded beds, combined with previous allocations of 85 new beds and 159 upgraded beds. Construction is expected to start in summer 2023.

The announcement brings the total number of long-term care beds in the development pipeline in Scarborough to 460 new and 916 upgraded beds, including 128 new beds at Hellenic Home; 224 new beds at Yee Hong Finch; 85 new and 363 upgraded beds at Altamont Scarborough; 21 new and 299 upgraded beds at Midland Gardens Care Community; and two new and 254 upgraded beds at Tendercare Nursing Homes.

The government has committed $6.4 billion to build 30,000 net new beds by 2028 and upgrade about 28,000 long-term care beds across the province.

“Our government has a plan to fix long-term care and a key part of that plan is building modern, safe and comfortable homes for our seniors,” said Minister of Long-Term Care Rod Phillips in a statement.
