EllisDon awarded contract for health centre project in Nova Scotia

MISSISSAUGA, ONT. – EllisDon has been awarded the construction manager contract for the IWK Emergency Department Expansion project by the Government of Nova Scotia.

The new four-level emergency department at IWK Health Centre will be built on University Avenue in Halifax next to the existing parking garage near the front of the Children’s Building. The project involves the demolition of an existing underground parking facility and replacement with a new facility located underneath the new emergency department, indicates an EllisDon release.

The new emergency department addition will connect the east entrance of the Goldbloom Building with the north entrance of the Children’s Building.

The project will double the size of the current emergency department to accommodate the anticipated population growth in the area and once complete, the facility will provide more privacy and will meet new infectious disease control and prevention measures, adds the release.

The project team will support the overall sustainability goals of the client, including achieving LEED Silver certification.

“The IWK Emergency Department Expansion is an extremely important project for future patient care and services for our growing community,” said Shaun Stiles, vice-president and area manager with EllisDon Atlantic Canada, in a statement. “We are honoured to be part of this next step forward for IWK Health and excited to continue our services for the Halifax community, which we have been a part of for more than 30 years.”
