Minto launches low-carbon geo-exchange system in Oakville

Minto launches low-carbon geo-exchange system in Oakville

OAKVILLE, ONT. — Minto Communities GTA and Creative Energy have announced they will begin the drilling process on boreholes for a geo-exchange community energy system for North Oak towers, at master-planned community called Oakvillage in Oakville, Ont.

The deep vertical closed-loop boreholes will be dug 800 feet deep.

Geo-exchange technology takes advantage of stable underground temperatures to provide heating or cooling year-round. North Oak’s geo-exchange community energy system is one of the first of its kind in the GTA and will result in a decrease in fossil fuel usage for space heating and cooling by up to 95 per cent.

There will eventually be hundreds of underground boreholes that circulate water as the heat exchange medium.

Creative Energy is the energy infrastructure developer on the project. The firm is currently developing 15 new energy systems in Ontario, British Columbia and Washington state.

Oakvillage is located at 3075 Trafalgar Rd. in Oakville. Towers 4A and 4B of the development were launched and sold out in 2021.
