Net-zero Scarborough community centre breaks ground

Net-zero Scarborough community centre breaks ground
PERKINS&WILL — The three-storey North East Scarborough Community and Child Care Centre project in Toronto represents the province’s first net zero facility of its kind.

TORONTO — The City of Toronto and design firm Perkins&Will hosted a groundbreaking ceremony recently, marking the start of construction of Ontario’s first net-zero community centre.

The new three-storey North East Scarborough Community and Child Care Centre will feature the first indoor cricket pitch for Toronto, leisure and 25-metre lap pools, child care, splash pad, running track, studio spaces, playground and skate park. The facility will be built at 8450 Sheppard Ave. E. in east Toronto.

The project dates back to 2004, when Toronto City Council adopted the Recreation Facilities Report. The report identified the northeast Scarborough neighbourhood of Toronto as an area having unmet needs for parks and recreational facilities.

Shortly after, the city hired Perkins&Will to design the facility.

The design calls for a building footprint of 84,000 square feet. The new facility will be constructed in Joyce Trimmer Park.
