Algoma Steel taps EllisDon as construction manager for electrification project

SAULT STE. MARIE, ONT. — Algoma Steel Group has announced the appointment of EllisDon as construction manager for completion of its Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) project at its plant in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.

Algoma is a producer of hot and cold rolled steel sheet and plate products. The EAF is expected to be operation in mid-2024, stated a release.

Upon completion, Algoma said, the plant will be one of the lowest-cost green-steel production facilities in North America. Steelmaking capacity will rise from 2.8-million tons to 3.7-million tons with an estimated 70-per-cent reduction in carbon emissions.

EllisDon will work with Algoma’s internal project team on the project, which is entering more complex phases. The manufacturer said the project is proceeding on budget and on time.

“We are very proud to join Algoma’s team in one of Canada’s largest electrification projects targeting reduced carbon emissions,” stated EllisDon CEO Geoff Smith in a statement.
