WELLAND, ONT. — Evertrust Developments has begun site cleanup at its Upper Vista Welland condo site in Welland, Ont. after receiving a partial demolition permit from the municipal government.
The Upper Vista Welland project suffered a structural failure on Feb. 18 and a further partial collapse on Feb. 26, both on the south side of the building.
The scope of work, as indicated to the city’s building department, is to “eliminate overhead safety hazards as specified in the safe working procedure.”
Receipt of the application by the city from the builder is part of the process outlined in the Ontario Building Code Act to satisfy the requirements of remedying the building. The permit is required before any portion of the building can be demolished.
Remediation workers with heavy equipment were seen on the site March 6.
The 226-unit residence is completely sold out.
Evertrust spokesperson Joyce Morocco stated in a televised interview that it is her understanding the firm intends to rebuild.
Referring to the south end, she said, “It is going to be pretty much a total rebuild on that.”
Morocco is also a Niagara Region councillor. She has not responded to requests for an interview on the project status or her dual responsibilities.
The City of Welland issued an Order to Remedy an Unsafe Building following the original partial collapse.
