Green Skills grant will help students prepare for sustainable jobs of the future
TREVOR OATTES β€” Students pursuing Algonquin College’s new Honours Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Building Conservation at the Perth, Ont. campus will have a chance to preserve and protect heritage buildings like the Perth Museum, thanks to a grant from the RBC Foundation.

PERTH, ONT. β€” A $500,000 green skills grant from RBC Foundation will enable Algonquin College students to repair, rehabilitate and preserve aging buildings.

Dozens of Algonquin College programs will benefit from the grant, including the newly announced honours bachelor of applied science degree in building conservation at the Perth Campus, states a release, adding it’s designed to enable a level of expertise in heritage building rehabilitation and will support the skilled trades industry as it evolves to a green economy.

The program will have its first ever intake of students in September 2024, with a target of 20 students in the first term and an additional group of 20 pathway transfers in the second year.

The grant will also play a supporting role in the funding of other Algonquin College initiatives, including community projects, field placements, applied research and the development of a new Computer Aided Design Lab.

The financial aid will help tackle the critical job shortage in the trades industry and prepare students for the environmentally sustainable jobs of the future, adds the release.

The grant is also supporting work-integrated learning opportunities, industry networking and event opportunities that focus on topics of interest to industry and applied research projects/partnerships which prioritize environmental sustainability.
