BURLINGTON, ONT. — The City of Burlington, Ont. has reported that work on its new Skyway Community Centre and Park is progressing well after setbacks caused mainly by wet weather prompted the owner to delay its projected commissioning date by a half year.
The $39-million project was originally scheduled for a June 1 completion this year but the city now says it should be completed in December.
City spokesperson Jeff Crowder said in mid-March the project was half finished but in his most recent update stated the project is now 65 per cent complete.
Burlington senior project manager Jennifer Johnson explained in a statement the delay is due to the very wet winter weather from October 2023 to March 2024, with at one point 18 days in a row of rain. That created scheduling issues and labour shortages.
“The roof installation is a big factor in getting the building weather tight, and roofing depends on dry weather to install,” Johnson stated.
The roof is now 90 per cent complete and glazing is being installed which has allowed the building to be enclosed. Interior construction is well underway stated Johnson.
The project is on Kenwood Avenue. The new rec centre will include a full-sized ice rink, multi-use program space, warm and cold spectator seating and indoor walking track.
Skyway Park was also redesigned to include a natural playground and a baseball diamond.
The facility replaces the 48-year-old single-pad Skyway Area, which has been demolished.
