LONDON — The Ontario government has announced renovations are now complete at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre in London, adding 110 beds to accommodate minimum- and medium-risk adult inmates.
The repurposed Regional Intermittent Unit opened on March 24 and also created 45 new correctional officer positions in the London area. The increased capacity will support mental health services, inmate programming and staff training, a release reads.
As part of the government’s plans to increase capacity, two new jails will be built in eastern Ontario: the Eastern Ontario Correctional Complex in Kemptville and the Brockville Correctional Complex. The St. Lawrence Valley Correctional and Treatment Centre and the Quinte Detention Centre will also be expanded.
