HAMILTON — Hamilton-based Alectra Utilities has announced it is spending $8 million this year to upgrade equipment serving the Dundas community in Hamilton.
The allocation is part of an investment of $150 million that will be spent on infrastructure such as poles, power lines, switches and transformers across Alectra’s service territory in the Greater Golden Horseshoe area, stated a Sept. 17 release.
This final stage of a three-phase project will primarily run along Park Street, Dundas Street, Hatt Street and Governors Road replacing the old four-kilovolt system with new, higher-voltage 27.6-kilovolt capacity.
The upgrades include installation of 291 poles, replacement of 25.2 kilometres of overhead powerline conductor and installation of 91 transformers and 16 switches.
Alectra serves more than one million homes and businesses and is now the largest municipally owned electric utility in Canada.
Shareholder municipalities are Barrie, Mississauga, Vaughan, Markham, Hamilton, St. Catharines and Guelph.
