GODERICH, Ont.—The work on one of Canada’s largest wind projects is complete.
After 18 months of construction the 270 megawatt (MW) K2 Wind Power Facility situated in the Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh in southwestern Ontario, officially started operations May 29.
Owned and operated by Capital Power Corporation, Capital Power LP, Samsung Renewable Energy Inc. and Pattern Energy Group LP, the facility is expected to generate clean energy for approximately 100,000 homes in Ontario annually.
"Samsung is proud to complete our third wind project under our Green Energy Investment Agreement with the government of Ontario," said Steve Cho, Samsung C&T vice-president.
Cho also said that during the project, an average of 300 jobs were created. At peak construction there were more than 500 workers employed.
Chief Executive Officer Mike Garland of Pattern Energy says the facility was built using local workers and materials, including turbine blades and towers made in Ontario. The 700 turbine tower sections were produced in Windsor, Ont. by CS Wind and the 420 blades were built in Tillsonburg, Ont. by Siemens. The K2 wind facility expects to have 20 full-time operations and maintenance employees including 10 seasonal positions.
