Campbell unveils new heat and power system

TORONTO—Guests were served hot local product on March 31 as Campbell Company of Canada and Toronto Hydro hosted dignitaries to celebrate the unveiling of a new $12 million Combine Heat and Power (CHP) system at the Campbell plant in Toronto.

The new energy system will supply up to 93 per cent of the steam required to cook soup.

Toronto Hydro contributed $5 million towards the cost of the CHP plant through its "saveONenergy" program. It is the first time the new program has been used.

The CHP project uses a natural gas turbine to drive a generator, which produces electricity.

The hot combustion gas is then delivered to a secondary system. Hot exhaust air produced by the turbine is then delivered to a heat-recovery steam generator, which uses the heat energy to produce steam at a pressure that is suitable for Campbell’s cooking needs.

The power output of the generator is 4.6 MW, and the steam is generated at a rate of up to 90,000 lb/hour, at 165 psi.

The Campbell facility remains connected to Toronto’s electricity grid and Toronto Hydro will continue to supply a small amount of electricity on a daily basis, as well as full power when necessary.

Other recent energy-efficiency projects at the plant have included a $100,000 compressed-air upgrade, a major LED lighting retrofit and the introduction of sensors.

Guests attending the launch were served Campbell soup products.

The plant is located at 60 Birmingham St. in Etobicoke, Ont.
