BOSTON, M.A. — National construction management firm Shawmut Design and Construction, headquartered in Boston, M.A., recently celebrated Women in Construction Week recognizing women within the company and the industry with virtual celebrations.

Shawmut says it is committed to equity and diversity and supporting women in construction and has implemented various workplace equity efforts. The firm’s entry-level construction management team is 44 per cent female which is more than five times the industry average of eight per cent in construction manager roles and 24 per cent of leadership roles are held by women.  The company has also established a 100 per cent pay and promotion equity.

“In 2019, Shawmut proactively engaged a law firm to review all compensation elements, including a complete salary audit,” states a release. “Areas of inequity were rectified and are continuously reviewed and adjusted, with additional rigor employed to define strong performance, articulate promotion readiness, and pay transparency.”

Sponsorship relationships are also a priority for the firm, pairing high-potential, underrepresented employees with executive sponsors.

According to the release, the first round of relationships saw 95 per cent retention: 50 per cent were promoted during the 18-month relationship, 30 per cent were promoted to the senior leadership team, and 100 per cent reported increased feelings of engagement.

More recently, task forces were launched to increase outreach to Minority, Woman, and Local Business Enterprises. The company-wide Diversity Leadership Council was also enhanced by newly established Regional Diversity Leadership Councils, which includes over 70 members nationwide, advises the executive leadership team and drives the strategy and execution of processes supporting a culture of belonging and inclusivity, adds the release.
