Calgary P3 biosolids project reaches substantial completion

CALGARY – A biosolids facility built for the City of Calgary has reached substantial completion.

The source separated organics (SSO) and Class A biosolids in-vessel composting facility was built by the Chinook Resource Management Group, of which Maple Reinders PPP Limited is a partner, as a public-private partnership (P3) project with the City of Calgary.

The project used a design-build-finance-operate-maintain model, where Maple Reinders’ subsidiary AIM Environmental Group will operate the facility for the next 10 years.

The facility will process 100,000 wet tonnes per year of SSO, leaf and yard material, 40,000 wet tonnes per year of biosolids and is the first commercial building in Alberta to be registered under the LEED Gold v4 standard. It is the largest facility of its kind in North America.

According to a release from Maple Reinders, the project was finished on time and on budget.

"This project provided a unique opportunity for Maple Reinders to leverage its extensive experience in Class A biosolids and advanced SSO composting with its proficiency in the private financing of municipal infrastructure," said Maple Reinders Group director of infrastructure development Reuben Scholtens in a statement.

"As Maple Reinders celebrates its 50th year, these types of projects help set the tone for our next 50 years of unprecedented success."
