MHCA to hold working group meeting to review highway capital program

MHCA to hold working group meeting to review highway capital program

WINNIPEG – A working group will come together on May 30 to review the status of the 2024-2025 highways capital program composed of stakeholders and the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MTI).

The group will be comprised of members of the Manitoba Heavy Construction Association (MHCA) and the Manitoba chapter of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies.

The MTI has said the vast majority of projects for the 2024 program budget has been tendered and awarded already because, in part, much of the work is unplanned carryover from the 2023 construction season, an MHCA release said.

The MHCA release said the association is concerned by “the government’s decision to halt the policy of carrying over unexpended program dollars to the subsequent year’s program, a policy that has been in place since 2020.”

The association said it will also stress the need for the MTI to publicly release a report on the condition and needs of the transportation network in the interest of “crafting a plan to move closer to the necessary investment levels for the highways capital program.”
