VANCOUVER – The City of Vancouver plans to add 11,500 new homes to the busy Cambie Corridor which extends from downtown to south Vancouver.
The plan proposes the majority of the land between King Edward Avenue and West 33rd Avenue between Oak and Ontario Street be prezoned for townhouses. More townhouses are also planned between West 46th Avenue and West 57th Avenue. More than 4,000 of these homes will be targeted as affordable housing. Currently much of the land along the Cambie Corridor is occupied by low-density single family homes.
Phase Two of the plan concentrates on apartments and mixed-use buildings around Canada Line stations and along Cambie Street and other major streets.
"I’ve heard loud and clear that people want a mix of housing — rental, townhomes and row houses — near schools, parks and transit in Vancouver’s low density neighbourhoods; this plan for the Cambie Corridor provides that and more. City hall will keep pursuing all options to deliver the right supply of housing as affordably as we can so people who live and work in Vancouver can afford to stay here," said Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson in a statement.
Public open houses will be held today (June 15) from 4 to 8 p.m. and on Saturday, June 17 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m at the Oakridge Centre Auditorium at 650 West 41st Ave.
An online questionnaire is also available. Following public feedback the final Cambie Corridor Plan will be presented to Vancouver City Council in late fall or early 2018.
