Manitoba receives $130 million for railway infrastructure

WINNIPEG — With a rail network of approximately 20,000 route-miles across Canada and mid-America, as part of its $3.4-billion capital program for 2018, the Canadian National Railway (CN) will be investing approximately $130 million in Manitoba.

The investment is expected to improve railway infrastructure across the region, including the expansion of the Symington rail yard in Winnipeg which is the core of CN’s transcontinental network, explains a release.

With the addition of new and extended tracks, the project is expected to enhance the handling of rail cars across the country and into the United States.

Other capital program investments will be made for the replacement of approximately 30 miles of rail, the installation of more than 80,000 new railroad ties, reconstruction of 20 road crossing surfaces and maintenance work on bridges, culverts, signal systems and other related infrastructure in the province.

Earlier this year, as part of its investments in trade-enabling infrastructure and equipment, CN announced plans to purchase 350 new box cars for forest products and metals customers and another 350 lumbers cars to meet growing demand to move wood products. Another 1,000 Canadian built, high-cube grain hopper cars are also expected to be added over the next two years as a result of increasing crop yields.

The company expects to hire nearly 1,250 new conductors in Winnipeg and across Western Canada by late 2019.

With approximately 2,100 employees and 859 rail route-miles operated in Manitoba, CN has made a capital of investment of approximately $675 million in the province in the past five years.
