EDMONTON, ALTA. – The government of Canada is investing $18.1 million in expansion of the Francis Winspear Centre for Music in Edmonton.
The project will include building a 3809-square metre facility for community cultural programming with 550-seat performance venue with automated raked seating allowing different room configurations. The centre will have a flex-use mid-size acoustic hall, childcare centre, underground parkade, commercial and multi-function spaces.
“Arts and culture organizations are important job creators in Edmonton and across the country. This critical infrastructure will allow an Edmonton and Canadian icon to expand its programming, to reach even more youth, and to embrace the space where arts and the digital world meet. The expanded Francis Winspear Centre for Music will inspire and delight Edmontonians, Albertans, and Canadians for decades to come,” Edmonton Centre MP Randy Boissonnault said.
“The Government of Alberta is focused on prioritizing infrastructure projects that invest in Albertans. By supporting projects like the Winspear Centre expansion, we help people get jobs. We also boost opportunities for local businesses as more workers and visitors come to the area, and we increase access to cultural and learning experiences that help promote vibrant communities,” Alberta minister of infrastructure Prasad Panda said.
The federal government is using the Community, Culture and Recreation Infrastructure stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program for its funding of the Winspear project. The province of Alberta is putting $13 million into the project and the City of Edmonton is contributing the remaining funds.
“This is a great example of all levels of government coming together to support an infrastructure project that will benefit the entire Edmonton Metropolitan Region. The Winspear is a thriving component to our arts community and investments like this are critical to maintaining and enhancing our reputation in offering incredible arts experiences,” Edmonton mayor Don Iveson said.
