OTTAWA — The Government of Canada has announced a more than $13 million investment to support Indigenous-led initiatives throughout Manitoba.

Included in the funding are 15 projects funded by PrairiesCan and one funded through Infrastructure Canada’s Green and Inclusive Community Buildings program, states a news release.

PrairiesCan funding amounts to $7.2 million and will support the following projects: the construction of a pavilion at Norway House Cree Nation, building a modern-traditional Ojibway longhouse community centre on Gambler First Nation, increasing Indigenous workforce inclusion and launching the Purpose Homes program to combine skills training and affordable new home construction in Winnipeg’s North End, among others.

The government is also investing $6.3 in the Ka Ni Kanichink Community Campus expansion project to support the construction of a new building.

The total funding amounts to $13.5 million and is expected to create more than 270 jobs.

“Indigenous communities continue to make significant contributions to Manitoba’s economy and the impact of these projects will create opportunities to gather, train and grow and share experiences,” said the Dan Vandal, minister for PrairiesCan, in the release.
