VICTORIA – A research institute on one of British Columbia’s remote islands just received $2 million in funding to help get coastal communities off diesel, once and for all.
The University of Victoria Pacific Regional Institute for Marine Energy Discovery received the funding from the Government of B.C. to support its research on tidal turbines and other renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, according to a press release.
The research, being done through the institute’s Blind Channel Test Centre on West Thurlow Island, will compare new technologies to see how they perform on the West Coast, one of the world’s most energetic tidal and wave climates.
Such projects will support diversification of B.C.’s marine power sector, clean-tech job creation and innovations for coastal communities around the world transitioning to clean energy.
The institute’s research lab is internationally recognized for helping off-grid coastal communities and industries adopt and develop renewable energy alternatives, reads the release.
Michele Babchuk, MLA for North Island, said the Institute is “on the leading edge of clean energy research.
“That will help remote communities like West Thurlow Island reduce diesel use, powering them up to be part of the marine economy.”
