AGASSIZ, B.C. — The Government of British Columbia is contributing $20.6 million to build 34 affordable homes in partnership with the Seabird Island Band.

The 34 homes will be split into two buildings, one with 12 accessible homes for elders and people living with disabilities and another three-storey, 16-apartment building with six townhomes, explains a news release.

Construction is anticipated to begin in March 2024.

“This project will make an impact on overcrowding issues in our current homes and will provide accessible living spaces for our elders and others with accessibility needs,” said Chief James Harris of the Seabird Island Band in the release.

“It will also offer low-income housing close to our community core and our health education and community services. Housing is a long-standing issue for First Nations across Canada and Seabird is no exception. Seabird works hard to help people build their own homes, but that is not an option for many of our low-income families.”

Seabird is a self-sufficient community that governs its own kindergarten through Grade 12 education and provides health care to Band members as well as neighbouring nations.

The housing development is being constructed near the band’s office and the community’s health care, education and cultural centres at the intersection of Pipeho:m Road and Stegoye Road.
