Feds, City of Saskatoon fast tracking 940 housing units

SASKATOON, SASK. – The Government of Canada and the City of Saskatoon have reached an agreement to fast track 940 housing units in the city over the next three years.

The agreement, under the Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF), will provide over $41.3 million and will work with Saskatoon’s Action Plan on 13 local initiatives, a release said.

The action plan speeds up home development near transit and in downtown Saskatoon and zoning changes will allow four units as-of-right across the city as well as greater building height near transit and more density near post-secondary institutions, the release said.

“The plan will also encourage more medium-density and multi-family homes such as townhouses and multiplexes, reduce parking requirements, and streamline processes for supportive housing which includes wraparound services like health care, social work and accessibility accessible building design,” the release said.

The City of Saskatoon estimates the deal will spur the construction of more than 25,200 housing units across the city over the next decade, the release said.
