Manitoba’s 2024 budget expands Winnipeg health centre

WINNIPEG – The Government of Manitoba has announced an expansion of Health Sciences Centre (HSC) Winnipeg through the 2024 budget.

Thirty-five medicine, 10 psychiatric and five surgical beds will be added at HSC over the next two years to expand inpatient capacity, reduce pressure on emergency departments and increase surgical capacity, a Manitoba government release said.

The 2024 budget allocated over $65 million to reduce emergency room wait times across the province, the release said, including staffing funding for a total of 151 new acute care beds.

Grace Hospital is in the process of opening 31 new medical and surgical beds including 10 as part of a new family medicine program. Since they were announced in November, five have been staffed and opened to provide care to Manitobans with another 36 acute care beds at St. Boniface Hospital opening in phases beginning later this spring.
